TOWN OF CARY TO RECOGNIZE CAP TEAM VOLUNTEERS TODAY

WHAT:     The Town of Cary will recognize Citizens Assisting Police (CAP) Team Volunteers.

WHEN:     Tuesday, December 4, 2007
                    6:30 p.m.

WHERE:   Cary Senior Center at Bond Park, 120 Maury O'Dell Place
                    Cary, NC

WHO:         The Town of Cary will present awards to outstanding members that have given
outstanding service to help support the Cary Police Department and the Cary community. Also, team members that have worked with fingerprinting will also be honored.

BACKGROUND:
CAP Team members serve the Cary Police Department without pay in a variety of functions, freeing sworn officers for other duties. They do not carry weapons and cannot make arrests. CAP Team members help provide security at public events and assist the Police Department with fingerprinting, child safety seat installation, clerical duties, service center staffing, Community Watch programs and other duties.

Before becoming CAP Team members, a volunteer must successfully complete Cary's Citizens Police Academy and receive training in such responsibilities as report writing. Cary Police formalized the CAP program in summer 2000 after Citizen Police Academy graduates asked for a way to continue volunteering with the department. By the summer of 2002, the CAP program had 31 volunteers. Today, the program has nearly 140 volunteers.

DIRECTIONS:
From I-40, take the Harrison Avenue exit and travel south on Harrison Avenue. Turn right onto Cary Parkway, and then travel Cary Parkway to High House Road. Turn left onto High House Road, and then turn right onto Maury O'Dell Place. The Senior Center is located on the right.
