EXCESSIVE RAINS LEAD TO SEWER OVERFLOW

CARY , NC Because of excessive rains from the remnants of Tropical Storm Alberto, two surcharging manholes at the Walnut Creek Pump Station, 1100 Buck Jones Road resulted in a 7,200-gallon spill on Wednesday, about 5 p.m.   The untreated waste reached Walnut Creek ; no fish-kill was observed.  The heavy rains prevented clean-up efforts, and the storm event naturally flushed the area.

The Clean Water Act requires public notice in the form of a news release issued by public works operators within 48 hours of the detection of a wastewater overflow of 1,000 gallons or greater that also reaches surface waters.  Paid advertisements are also necessary for spills in excess of 14,999 gallons.
