SEABROOK AVENUE IN CARY EXPECTED TO REOPEN THIS WEEK FOLLOWING ROAD COLLAPSE

New Storm Drain Pipe Installed and Road Repair Underway

CARY, NC – After being closed for nearly one month as a result of heavy rains from Tropical Storm Alberto, Seabrook Avenue from Dunhagen Place to Glengarry Drive in Cary is expected to reopen later this week even though final paving and detail work will continue for a few more weeks.  The broken storm drain pipe that caused the road to collapse along this section was replaced on July 10, 2006 , and Town crews are working to get a base layer of pavement down by July 14, 2006 .  Once in place, the road can reopen.

“We have been working diligently to complete the repair and get the road back open to traffic,” said Public Works Director Mike Bajorek.  “We realize that this unexpected closing has been an inconvenience to motorists in this part of Cary , and we appreciate everyone’s support and patience as the project continues.”

As part of the repair, crews are also installing new, concrete curb and gutter on both sides of the street, a concrete sidewalk on one side of the street, and a temporary asphalt base that will match the pavement level around the collapsed area.

Seabrook Avenue was already slated for repaving as part of the Town’s regular annual street maintenance work.  This means that once the road reopens later this week, travelers in the area can expect work to continue as a private contractor grinds down and resurfaces the entire length of the roadway from Dunhagen Place to Glengarry Drive .

The Seabrook Avenue section was closed on Wednesday, June 14, after a 72-inch diameter storm drain pipe collapsed.  The collapse caused a section of the road to wash away, damaging water and sewer lines adjacent to the storm water pipe; the collapsed section measured nearly 30 feet wide by 15 feet deep.  The water main and the sewer line were immediately repaired, but the storm drain pipe had to be replaced.

Estimated cost of the repair is $150,000.
