CARY IS ONCE AGAIN SAFEST IN NC AND IN THE SOUTH

Town Continues as One of Safest in America

CARY , NC – The Town of Cary has been declared the 8^th safest of 371 large cities in the nation in the 13^th Annual Morgan Quitno Safest (And Most Dangerous) City Award.  Once again, Cary is the only North Carolina municipality listed in the top 10 as well as the highest ranked southern city overall.  This is the eighth year in a row that Cary has been ranked in the top 10 safest cities in the U.S.   Cary was also recognized as the 3^rd safest among communities with populations of 100,000 to 499,999.  As of July 2006, Cary ’s estimated population was 115,854.

“We are very proud to continue to be recognized as one of the most exemplary cities in the country,” said Town of Cary Police Chief Scott Cunningham .  “Keeping Cary safe is only possible through the strong and effective partnerships we foster and enjoy between our organization and our citizens.”

Other top-ranked cities, in numerical order, include:  Brick Township , NJ ; Amherst , NY , Mission Viejo , CA ; Newton , MA ; Troy , MI ; Colonie , NY and Irvine CA .  Cary was followed by Greece , NY and Coral Springs , FL that were ranked 9^th and 10^th, respectively.

Cary ’s pick as 8^th safest came in an announcement from Morgan Quitno Press, a publishing and research company based in Lawrence, KS, that measures a city’s rate in six basic crime categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft.  All cities with 75,000+ populations that reported crime data to the FBI for the six crime categories were included in the rankings and each of the six crimes were given equal weight.  Final 2005 statistics were used in determining the rankings.
