TOWN OF CARY TO REOPEN CARPENTER-UPCHURCH ROAD AND IMPLEMENT NEW TRAFFIC PATTERNS Saturday

A section of the new High House Road bridge will open to motorists

CARY , NC The Town of Cary is making progress on the High House Road widening project and is expecting to reopen Carpenter-Upchurch Road at High House Road on Saturday, August 26, 2006 about 9 a.m.   The intersection has been closed to traffic since July 5 while crews raised the road level for the approach leading to the new High House Road railroad bridge, just west of the Carpenter Upchurch Road intersection.

At the same time, motorists can expect the following shifts:

  • All motorists traveling on the old High House Road bridge west of Carpenter Upchurch Road will be shifted onto two lanes of the new railroad bridge.  Once complete, the new bridge will include six lanes.

  • Jenks Carpenter Road will close to thru-traffic from Collins Road to High House Road on August 26 beginning at about 7 a.m. and should reopen by 8 p.m.   The closing is necessary for crews to raise the road level for the approach to the High House Road intersection just west of the bridge.

  • The split-traffic pattern currently in place on High House Road west of the railroad bridge will be shifted into a two-lane, two-way pattern in the northbound lanes while crews widen High House Road on the south side.  The shift is expected to be in place until March 2007.

“We’re glad to be moving forward on the next phases of this very important project,” said Senior Project Engineer Tom Ellis.  “We have been working with schools in this part of Cary , and we know that parents, students, and teachers are especially looking forward to the reopening of Carpenter-Upchurch Road at High House Road .”

The Town began widening the .9-mile segment of High House Road from N.C. 55 to just east of Carpenter Upchurch Road in November 2005 as part of an effort to improve traffic flow in western Cary .  The project includes the widening of High House Road to a four-lane divided highway and includes the replacement of the two-lane bridge over the CSX Railroad tracks with a six-lane bridge.  The project is scheduled to be complete in spring 2007.
