CARY SNOW FIGHTERS ARE READY TO HIT THE ROAD

FOR WINTRY WEATHER TONIGHT

CARY, NC – With weather forecasters calling for the possibility of snow tonight, the Town of Cary’s A-Team has 14 loaded spreaders and 22 mounted plows ready to keep Cary’s roads clear and safe.

“We are fully prepared should wintry weather affect our citizen’s mobility,” said Town of Cary Public Works Division Director Mike Bajorek.  “Crews will be pre-treating bridges and overpasses before the storm.  As soon precipitation starts, crews will begin looking for problem areas.  We are also asking citizens to work with us to ensure that vehicles are not in the roadway so that our staff can safely and quickly clear the roads.”

The Town has 16 pick-up truck plows to clear Cary’s 450 miles of roads and an additional 100 miles of state-maintained roads in Cary.  The A-Team has 2,000 tons of sand/salt mix supply available, if needed, along with an additional 350 tons of pure salt.

Snow Fighters clear thoroughfares, major intersections, and collector streets first, followed by primary roads in subdivisions and then cul-de-sacs.  The Town does not clear private parking lots, including those in apartment and condominium complexes or at businesses.

Citizens are also reminded of the following tips during inclement weather:

ü      Decisions about canceling parks, recreation, and cultural programs are generally made by around 3 p.m. and 7 a.m.  Call (919) 469-4061 for updates.

ü      Be neighborly.  Check on neighbors to make sure that everyone is OK.

ü      Not go alone.  Stay indoors during severe winter weather. If you do decide to venture out--whether walking or driving--let folks know when and where you are going so that they can contact emergency officials should you fail to reach your destination. Take a cell phone just in case.

ü      Not park on streets so that plows and other Town equipment can service the area.

ü      Not call 911 unless there is an emergency posing an immediate threat to life, health, or property.  All non-emergency snow calls should be placed to (919) 469-4090; customer service representatives will be staffing the phones during regular business hours.  Complete severe weather information is also available on the Town’s Web site, www.townofcary.org

ü      Subscribe now to our free email service for the latest Cary info.  The Town updates citizens and the media with news releases throughout winter weather events each morning, afternoon, and evening.  Just click on “Email Service” under Shortcuts at www.townofcary.org.

Assuming severe weather occurs as predicted, the next update will be issued around 4 a.m. unless changing conditions warrant sooner action.
