PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

Cary Police Department Participates in the

Summer 2005 “Booze It & Lose It” Campaign

The Cary Police Department, in coordination with the North Carolina Governor’s Highway Safety Program, will soon be participating in the Summer 2005 “Booze It & Lose It” Campaign.  Beginning August 19, 2005, and running through September 5, 2005, motorists can expect a significant increase in the number of driving while impaired checking stations and saturated patrols by police officers in and around the Cary area.

According to Traffic Sergeant Joseph Clifton, DWI enforcement is a top priority within the Town of Cary.  “Our traffic officers will be adjusting their work schedules during the campaign to ensure that manpower is high during peak enforcement hours.  During these times they will be observant for all traffic and criminal violations.”

According to the Governor’s Task Force on Driving While Impaired, the nationally recognized “Booze It & Lose It” high-visibility enforcement and public education program has played a significant role in reducing the number of driving while impaired fatalities in North Carolina over the last four years.  Other contributing factors include the efforts of key law enforcement, judicial partners, and members of community-based advocacy groups.

As they pass through upcoming sobriety checkpoints, Cary motorists will likely have the opportunity to see one of the State’s six mobile breath alcohol testing units.  Also known as BAT Mobiles, these mobile units contain all of the sobriety testing equipment found in a permanent law enforcement testing facility.  With an office for an onboard Magistrate, BAT Mobiles dramatically increase efficiency and reduce processing times for arresting officers.  The high visibility of these vehicles serves notice to the pubic of North Carolina’s dedication to DWI enforcement.
