CARY IS SAFEST IN NC AND IN THE SOUTHEASTERN US

CARY , NC – The Town of Cary has been declared the 10^th safest of 369 large cities in the nation in the 12^th Annual Morgan Quitno Safest (And Most Dangerous) City Award.  Once again, Cary is the only North Carolina municipality listed in the top 10 as well as the only southern city in the top 20.  This is the seventh year in a row that Cary has been ranked in the top 10 safest cities in the U.S.

“This is a tremendous accomplishment, especially when you consider that in communities with populations of 100,000 to 500,000, Cary is the third safest in America ,” said Cary Police Chief Scott Cunningham.  As of October 2005, Cary ’s population was 112,188.

Cary ’s pick as 10^th safest came in an announcement from Morgan Quitno Press, a publishing and research company based in Lawrence, KS, that measures a city’s rate in six basic crime categories: murder, rape, robbery, aggravated assault, burglary and motor vehicle theft.  All cities with 75,000+ populations that reported crime data to the FBI for the six crime categories were included in the rankings and each of the six crimes were given equal weight.  Final 2004 statistics were used in determining the rankings.
