CARY CELEBRATES NATIONAL Fire Prevention Week

CARY, NC – Puppet shows, displays, and Sparky the Firedog will all be part of the Town of Cary’s effort to reinforce this year’s National Fire Prevention Week theme--Use Candles with Care…When You Go Out, Blow Out!  Fire Department personnel will staff the event at Cary Towne Center mall from Monday, October 10 through Friday, October 14 from 9 a.m. – 9 p.m.

“Candle fires are one of the few types of home fires that have increased dramatically over the past decade, with two out of five candle fires starting in the bedrooms,” said Town of Cary Fire Education Specialist Kathy Ellis .  “And during December, the number of candle fires nearly doubles—the leading source of fuel being holiday decorations.”

Important tips to remember when using candles include:

  • Always stay in the room where candles are being burned.

  • Keep lit candles at least one foot away from anything that can burn.

  • Keep candles away from children.

  • Use sturdy candle holders that won’t tip or burn.

  • Burn candles on sturdy uncluttered surfaces.

  • Keep lit candles at least one foot away from curtains, mattresses and other combustibles.

  • Trim candle wicks to one-quarter inch before lighting.

  • When lighting candles, keep your hair and clothing away from the flame.

  • Extinguish candles when they burn to within two inches of their holder.

  • Be careful not to splatter hot wax when extinguishing a candle.

Fire Prevention Week is part of a year-round initiative that encourages citizens to act responsibly and practice good fire and life safety habits.  For more, visit www.townofcary.org or call (919) 469-4056.
