PUBLIC SERVICE ANNOUNCEMENT

CHECK YOUR SMOKE DETECTORS

Take time now to make sure your smoke detectors are properly placed and maintained.  So far this year, Town of Cary Firefighters have responded to more than 137 false alarm fire calls that were caused by improperly maintained or improperly installed smoke detectors.  While smoke detectors are your best early warning system for fire—cutting your risk of dying in half—improperly installed or maintained detectors are virtually useless.

§         Install smoke detectors near sleeping areas and on each level of your home according to manufacturer’s instructions;

§         Regularly clean your detector using a vacuum or dust brush without removing the detector’s cover;

§         Change batteries at least twice a year—when the time changes is a good way to remember; a chirping sound signals a low battery; and,

§         Replace any smoke detector that is more than 10 years old.
