NEWS RELEASE
CARY BEGINS WIDENING PORTION OF NC 54/CHAPEL HILL ROAD
CARY, NC – The notice to begin the project has been given to contractors working for the Town of Cary to widen a particularly congested section of about one mile of NC 54/Chapel Hill Road near downtown Cary. The $5.225 million project will create a four-lane, median-divided section from Reedy Creek Road to Trinity Road. Designated bicycle lanes as well as sidewalks on both sides are included. The project will also improve the Maynard Road intersection by allowing for two left-turn lanes from Maynard Road eastbound onto N.C. 54/Chapel Hill Road. Work should be complete in the winter of 2007. Over 20,000 vehicles travel on this roadway daily.
“Part of the Town of Cary’s Comprehensive Transportation Plan, this project illustrates the Town's continued commitment to providing a safe, convenient, and efficient multi-modal transportation system for those traveling in and through Cary,” said Senior Engineer Russ Overton.
REA Contracting was awarded the construction contract for $3,941,960.12. The company is expected to immediately begin the project by mobilizing equipment onto the site and installing erosion control devices.
While provisions have been made to limit construction activity to periods outside the weekday rush hours, motorists should expect delays while traveling through the construction corridor once construction begins later this year.
