TOWN OF CARY OFFERS SCHOOL BUS SAFETY TIPS

CARY , NC In light of today's terrible tragedy in which four children were injured while waiting for their school bus, the Town of Cary Police Department offers the following safety information for parents and their children:

  • Children should wait for the bus in a safe spot such as on the sidewalk; where there is no sidewalk, children should stand on the shoulder several feet back from the pavement.
  • Never stand in the roadway while waiting for the bus.
  • Tell children not to engage in horseplay, especially as the bus or other vehicles are approaching.
  • While waiting for the bus, children should pay close attention to their surroundings and be prepared to react to safety threats.
  • When the bus is approaching, children should wait until the bus comes to a complete stop before entering and exiting the bus.
  • Whenever possible, it’s a good idea for an adult to wait with children at the bus stop.

Just before dawn today, four children waiting for their bus were struck by a motorist who cited the weather as a contributing factor.  The accident occurred near the intersection of Wrenn Drive and Ashton Place , just west of Kildaire Farm Road .  Two of the children had to be transferred to area hospitals.  The driver was charged with driving too fast for the road conditions.
