REMEMBERING 9/11:
CARY WALNUT STREET WIDENING DEDICATION

WHAT: A groundbreaking ceremony for widening of the remainder of Walnut Street—from Tryon Road to the Centrum shopping center in Cary

WHEN: 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 14, 2002

WHERE: 6051 Tryon Road (approximately 0.1 mile on the right) just south of the Centrum (Southwest corner of Walnut/Tryon)

WHO: Town of Cary, NC

BACKGROUND:

Where were you on September 11th? That morning, officials with the Town of Cary were gathered to celebrate a beginning—a voter-approved project to improve the quality of life of folks in the region by reducing travel time through an important corridor in Cary.

Tomorrow, officials will gather again, this time to celebrate the completion of the project as one small example of America’s moving forward. The ceremony will include a moment of silence and will recognize Cary public safety officials who will cut the ribbon on the project while police, fire, and EMS vehicles line the road with sirens blaring.

Approved by Cary voters in the 1999 Cary Community Bonds Referendum, this $5.3 million project began about 1500 feet east of Dillard Drive and continued to Holly Springs Road. This project is a six lane median-divided roadway and includes realigning the Walnut Street /Tryon Road intersection. Walnut Street is a major east/west thoroughfare that runs from the east/southeast edge of town to downtown, with traffic counts of 20,000-30,000 vehicles per day.
