TOWN OF CARY FINAL WINTER WEATHER UPDATE:
CARS ON STREETS = GARBAGE ON CURBS, SNOW ON STREETS
CARY, NC –Want the snow and garbage gone? You can help by encouraging
your neighbors to move their vehicles off of the streets and into their
driveways.
The Town of Cary has 15 crews out collecting curbside garbage for Thursday
and Friday customers today, but their progress is being sorely hindered by the
number of cars and trucks parked in the streets, making it nearly impossible to
get garbage trucks into many neighborhoods.
The same is true of snow removal. Plows are being stymied by car-lined
cul-de-sacs.
"We’re doing everything possible to get things back to normal,"
said Public Works Division Director Mike Bajorek, "but we’re really
starting to hit the wall now because of parked cars." Bajorek said that
crews are at the point now of having to decide to altogether skip areas where
access is tight.
Because of the soggy ground and to speed collection as much as possible, Cary
crews are only collecting garbage—no recycling--that has been brought to the
curb. Elderly or disabled residents who cannot take their garbage to the curb
should call 469-4090 to arrange for special assistance.
Christmas trees will be collected town-wide from the curb on Monday along
with the regular yard waste collection.
Bajorek expects that solid waste and recycling schedules will return to
normal on Tuesday.
The Michigan crews and Cary’s Snow A Team are continuing to clear
subdivisions and cul-de-sacs.
The Snow A-Team will convert from plowing back to sanding and salting as the
evening’s hard freeze begins after sundown. Crews continue to work rotating
12-hour shifts around the clock.
There have been 11 traffic accidents reported in Cary since midnight, none
with serious injuries.
Please continue to call 911 only if there is an emergency posing an immediate
threat to life, health, or property. For non-emergency snow information, visit www.townofcary.org.
This is the final snow update unless changing conditions warrant further
action.

TOWN OF CARY EVENING WINTER WEATHER UPDATE:
DOING MORE THAN JUST TALKING TRASH TOMORROW
CARY, NC – It’s all about getting ready for garbage in Cary tonight.
At this hour, the Michigan crews are continuing to use their small plows to
clear subdivisions and cul-de-sacs in line for the special solid waste
collection set to begin just after sunrise Saturday. Town crews will collect
Thursday and Friday solid waste at the curb on Saturday; there will be no
backyard pickups as long as yards are soggy and inaccessible. Thursday and
Friday solid waste customers should have their garbage at the curb by 7 a.m. on
Saturday to ensure collection. There will be no recycling collection for these
customers this week. Elderly or disabled residents who cannot take their garbage
to the curb should call 469-4090 to arrange for special assistance. Christmas
trees will be collected town-wide from the curb on Monday.
While the Snow Wolverines work the circles, Cary’s Snow A-Team has
converted from plowing back to sanding and salting as the evening’s hard
freeze is again making driving hazardous. Crews continue to work rotating
12-hour shifts around the clock.
Another group that has worked alongside Town of Cary crews is the people and
machines of Percy Johnson, Incorporated, located off Old Stage Road near Garner,
North Carolina.
"The folks at Percy Johnson have been terrific. I can’t say enough
good things about them," said Roy Correll, Operations Coordinator for the
Town’s Public Works Division. Correll noted that PJI had provided numerous
motor graders, backhoes, and support equipment for this snow as well as for
snows from years past. "They’ve been with us for as long as I can
remember, and we really appreciate all they do for Cary."
There have been seven traffic accidents reported in Cary since 3 p.m. Friday,
none with serious injuries.
Please continue to call 911 only if there is an emergency posing an immediate
threat to life, health, or property. For non-emergency snow information, visit www.townofcary.org.
The next snow update will be issued around 3 p.m. Saturday unless changing
conditions warrant earlier action.

TOWN OF CARY AFTERNOON
WINTER WEATHER UPDATE: PREPARING
FOR TONIGHT
CARY, NC – Under sunny skies, Town of Cary Public Works crews and
their Michigan counterparts are pushing hard to clear as much remaining
snow as possible before tonight’s expected hard freeze. Once the
freeze hits, operations will shift back to sanding and salting. At that
time, drivers should conclude their travels as soon as possible since
driving conditions should worsen.
For the most part, the focus today has been on subdivisions, especially
those on Saturday’s special sanitation route. Town crews will collect
Thursday and Friday solid waste at the curb on Saturday; there will be no
backyard pickups as long as yards are soggy and inaccessible. Thursday and
Friday solid waste customers should have their garbage at the curb by 7
a.m. on Saturday to ensure collection. Elderly or disabled residents who
cannot take their garbage to the curb should call 469-4090 to arrange for
special assistance.
Town-wide Christmas tree pickup is still set for Monday.

TOWN OF CARY MORNING WINTER WEATHER UPDATE:
TREACHEROUS DRIVING THIS A.M.
CARY, NC – The skies are clear and so are many roads in Cary,
thanks to overnight plowing, sanding, and salting by Town of Cary Public
Works crews.
"Roads have been scraped down to the asphalt, but there’s a very
thin coating of ice on them," said Mike Bajorek, Cary’s Public
Works Division Director. "Until the sun can come out and melt it,
it’s going to be treacherous."
With yesterday afternoon’s burst of snow pretty much taken care of
along main transportation routes, crews—including those from
Michigan—are back to focusing on subdivisions today, especially those on
Saturday’s special sanitation route.
Town of Cary Police Lieutenant Mark Parker advises commuters to wait as
long as possible before setting out today. "While the roads look
good, they will be hazardous this morning."
Fortunately, there have been no traffic accidents reported in Cary
since 8 p.m. Thursday.
Police are expected to open S.E. Maynard Road from Seabrook to Hampton
Valley this morning as road crews were able to clear it overnight. This
portion of Maynard was closed to thru traffic late Thursday afternoon due
to ice.
SOLID WASTE & RECYCLING COLLECTION
Town crews will collect Thursday and Friday solid waste at the curb on
Saturday; no backyard pickups as long as yards are soggy and inaccessible.
Thursday and Friday solid waste customers should have their garbage at the
curb by 7 a.m. on Saturday to ensure collection. Elderly or disabled

TOWN OF CARY EVENING WINTER WEATHER UPDATE
SAME OLD, SAME OLD
CARY, NC – Go home and sleep late if you can! That’s
the message in Cary as Public Works crews battle back the continuing
falling snow and slush-turning-to-ice this evening.
"A lot of the ground we covered last night and today has been lost
this afternoon and evening thanks to the weather, said Town of Cary Public
Works Division Director Mike Bajorek. We continue to have more than 100
folks working 12-hour shifts 24/7, but we’re back to really focusing on
our major roads and intersections." Bajorek added that the Michigan
crews are still working neighborhoods expected to receive solid waste
collection on Saturday.
TRAVEL
The roads are treacherous and will likely continue that way until
warmer temperatures called for on Friday morning starts to loosen up the
thick sheets of black ice that blanket many roadways. Do not drive. If you
do leave home, be sure to let someone know when and where you are going so
that emergency officials can be contacted if you don’t make it. Take a
cell phone with you.
Southeast Maynard Road from Seabrook to Hampton Valley in central Cary
will be closed until sometime Friday due to it having turned into an ice
rink the afternoon. Cars leaving the area will not be allowed in via
Maynard and will need to access neighborhoods via Cary Parkway.
Fortunately, there remain no serious injuries from motor vehicle
accidents in Cary.
SOLID WASTE & RECYCLING COLLECTION
Town crews will collect Thursday and Friday solid waste at the curb on
Saturday; there will be no backyard pickups as long as yards are soggy and
inaccessible. Thursday and Friday solid waste customers should have their
garbage at the curb by 7 a.m. on Saturday to ensure collection. Elderly or

TOWN OF CARY AFTERNOON WINTER WEATHER UPDATE
PARTS OF SE MAYNARD CL0SED DUE TO ACCIDENTS
CARY, NC – Southeast Maynard Road from Seabrook to Hampton Valley
in central Cary has just been closed to thru traffic due to more than 15
cars now stranded at the bottom of the hill. Cars leaving the area will
not be allowed in via Maynard and will need to access neighborhoods via
Cary Parkway.
"This area at the bottom of the hill has turned into an ice
rink," said Captain Pat Bazemore of the Cary Police. "No one is
getting out until it thaws tomorrow."
Until this point, there had been only three reports of motor vehicle
accidents in Cary since 11 a.m. Thursday. Fortunately, there are still no
serious injuries.
With heavier snow falling now in Cary, citizens who ventured out during
the day are strongly advised to get indoors and stay put for the evening.
As temperatures fall with sunset, road and sidewalk slush is expected to
refreeze making travel extremely dangerous. Cary’s Snow A-Team is
refocusing its efforts on thoroughfares, major collector streets, and
intersections, plowing as well as sanding and salting, while the eight
Michigan crews clear subdivisions and cul-de-sacs. Top priorities for
Cary’s "Snow Wolverines" are the neighborhoods needing
sanitation collection today and Friday.
SOLID WASTE & RECYCLING COLLECTION
Town crews will collect Thursday and Friday solid waste at the curb on

TOWN OF CARY NOON WINTER WEATHER UPDATE
CARY, NC – The Town of Cary is open for business today.
However, citizens are encouraged to remain indoors if possible to
facilitate further snow removal from streets.
Cary’s Snow A-Team is plowing in subdivisions now with plans to begin
hitting Cary’s 1300+ cul-de-sacs this afternoon. For that, Town crews
will be joined by the Michigan crews which, with their smaller trucks and
plows, can make quick work of the small, hard to clear areas. After a
little over six inches of snow has fallen in Cary, Town crews have major
thoroughfares, intersections, and collector streets initially plowed and
are returning to open them up even more.
While driving is still hazardous, there have been no reports of motor
vehicle accidents in Cary since 5 a.m. Thursday.
"It feels like folks may have learned a valuable lesson from the
snow of 2000," said Riley Godley, Telecommunications Supervisor in
Cary. "Folks are, for the most part, staying off the roads and out of
harm’s way."
SOLID WASTE & RECYCLING COLLECTION
While the Town had hoped to collect garbage and recycling from the curb
today, that will not be possible. Public works officials will decide this
evening if any collections can take place on Friday. When collection does
resume, crews will only be able to collect from the curb while the snow is
on the ground; no backyard pickup. Elderly or disabled residents who
cannot take their garbage to the curb should call 469-4090 to arrange for
a special collection later this week.
COMMUNICATIONS
Do not call 911 unless there is an emergency posing an immediate threat
to life, health, or property. All non-emergency snow calls should be
placed to 469-4090. Complete severe weather information is also available

TOWN OF CARY MORNING WINTER WEATHER UPDATE
CARY, NC – After a little over six inches of snow has fallen in
Cary, Town crews have major thoroughfares, intersections, and collector
streets cleared and are working now on main roads in subdivisions. Crews
are also adding more sand/salt to bridges and other cold "hot
spots" in preparation for the morning commute.
"Even though we’ve gotten things pretty passable, it’s going
to be very slick out there this morning," said Mike Bajorek, Town of
Cary Public Works Division Director. "What’s been left from the
plows is freezing, making driving hazardous this morning."
Since 9 p.m. Wednesday, there have been 15 motor vehicle accidents in
Cary; with injuries. That’s in addition to more than two dozen that
occurred between sundown and 9 p.m. yesterday.
SOLID WASTE COLLECTION
The Town of Cary plans to begin regular Thursday solid waste collection
later this morning. As with the snow of 2000, residents are being asked to
bring their garbage to the curb if they want it collected today; no
backyard pickup. Elderly or disabled residents who cannot take their
garbage to the curb should call 469-4090 to arrange for a special
collection later this week.
The Town is also hoping to collect recycling today; a decision will be
made later this morning.
COMMUNICATIONS

TOWN OF CARY EVENING WINTER WEATHER UPDATE
CARY, NC – Get home and stay home is the message from
Cary!
The number of traffic accidents in Cary is skyrocketing as the
snow begins to fall and drivers make their way home. Officials
attribute more than two dozen accidents to the weather. Fortunately,
none has been life threatening thus far. Do not call 911 unless
there is an emergency posing an immediate threat to life, health, or
property.
With the first blanket of snow of the new year now on the ground,
the Town of Cary’s Snow A-Team is on the job spreading the first
of its 600 tons of a sand/salt mix on bridges, overpasses, and at
major intersections. Plows have begun running and will continue 24/7
until the job is done.
As with the Storm of 2000, Cary is bringing in seven crews with
plows from Michigan.
"The Michigan crews were critical in helping to clear roads
fast," said Puublic Works Division Director Mike Bajorek.
"We’re glad to have them back." The crews are expected
to arrive in the early morning hours of Thursday and will, after a
few hours of rest, hit the roads.
TRAVEL
Roads in Cary are hazardous. With precipitation continuing to fall,
drivers should use extreme caution and wrap up any necessary trips
as soon as possible.
The leading cause of death during winter storms is
transportation. If you have to drive, be sure you’re prepared. Get
FEMA’s Winter Driving Fact Sheet at townofcary.org.
Use sand, not salt or fertilizer, for traction on slick spots.
Both salt and fertilizer can be toxic to fish and creek creatures
that get impacted when the snow melts and carries these chemicals
into waterways.
Don’t park in the street in Cary; stick to the entrance of your
driveway. Public Works crews can’t effectively clear streets
blocked by cars. If plows do get through, expect numerous
windrows--snow piles--to be created that may block, even bury,
street vehicles.
PLOWING
Assuming the snow does accumulate, Town crews will clear
thoroughfares and major intersections followed by collector streets
and then primary roads in subdivisions; cul-de-sacs are cleared
last. The Town does not clear private parking lots, including those
in apartment and condo complexes. There are over 450 street miles in
Cary and more than 1300 cul-de-sacs.
THE HUMAN FACTOR
Thus far, there have been more than two dozen vehicle accidents
reported related to the winter weather.
In cases of severe weather, the Town of Cary encourages neighbors
to check on neighbors to make sure that everyone is okay. Call 911
only if there is an actual threat to life, health, or property. For
non-emergency info, go to townofcary.org
or call 469-4090.
Stay indoors during severe winter weather. If you do decide to
venture out, whether walking or driving, let folks know when and
where you are going so that they can contact emergency officials
should you fail to reach your destination. Take a cell phone just in
case.
COMMUNICATIONS
Do not call 911 unless there is an emergency posing an immediate
threat to life, health, or property. All non-emergency snow calls
should be placed to 469-4090. Complete severe weather information is
also available on the Town’s web site, www.townofcary.org.
The Town will update citizens and the media with news releases
throughout the event each morning, afternoon, and evening. Get the
latest news from the town via the web or by subscribing to the Town’s

The next snow update will be issued around 5:30 a.m. Thursday
unless changing conditions warrant earlier action.
