OPERATION "SLOW DOWN" BEGINS IN CARY
CARY, NC – On Wednesday, May 1, Cary police officers will begin a 6-week
long speed enforcement campaign. Using radar, Vascar, and pace clocks with
certified speedometers, police hope to reduce incidents of vehicular speeding
and decrease injuries and property damage due to motor vehicle crashes caused by
speeding. A mobile traffic radar trailer will be placed at various locations
throughout the Town to increase motorist awareness of speeding.
Uniformed officers will concentrate their speed enforcement efforts on the stretches of roadways that have high rates of accidents, usually major thoroughfares, as well as residential streets with high complaint tallies.
"The Town continually strives to enhance the quality of life in Cary," said Police Chief Windy Hunter. "Traffic safety initiatives contribute to this overall goal."
In 2001, there were 3,674 accidents in Cary, 33 percent of, which were speed related. There were 755 personal injuries as well as three fatalities, and total property damage of over $9 million. In an effort to reduce these numbers, every available officer will be involved in this project. The public should not expect many warnings to be issued; Operation "Slow Down" will be a vigorous enforcement effort.
