CARY OFFICERS SHOOT SHARPEST IN THE STATE

CARY, NC – Four Town of Cary Police Officers have been ranked in the top twenty shooters in North Carolina, according to the North Carolina Police Combat Pistol League who honored them on Saturday night at the annual Governors Top Twenty Banquet. The marksmen received a certificate signed by Governor Mike Easley and a pin that is worn on the officer's uniform.

The NCPCPL is a group of law enforcement officers from throughout the state who shoot eight pistol matches each year from March through September. Officers compete for a number of honors in various categories, including the Governors Top Twenty that ranks the top twenty competitors in North Carolina.

Senior Officer Jerry McCormick, 38, who has been with the Cary police department for four years finished the season ranked sixth in the state. Senior Officer Patrick Merrill, 35, has served nine years with Cary and finished 16th. Sergeant Travis Baker, 36, who has served nine years with Cary PD, finished 17th, and Officer John Moore, 29, who has served three years with Cary PD finished 20th. Three other Cary officers finished within the top thirty.

"Those of us on the pistol team really enjoy taking precision one step further," said Lt. David Wulff, Cary PD’s Team Leader. "The department's commitment to supporting officers in the NCPCPL is just one example of how the Town is continuing efforts to provide officers the best training to better respond to the needs of Cary citizens."

The Cary Police Department has been competing in the NCPCPL the past four years with an eight-officer team, which over the last four years has consistently found success in individual and team competition winning numerous awards.
