BATTERIES NOT INCLUDED
NO LONGER PART OFCARY’S RECYCLING LEXICON
CARY, NC – Dead rechargeable batteries get another life in Cary, thanks to the Town’s new rechargeable battery recycling program. The Town of Cary, in cooperation with the Rechargeable Battery Recycling Corporation (RBRC), is proud to offer Cary citizens the opportunity to recycle their used rechargeable batteries for free and keep them out of landfills. Simply bring your rechargeable batteries to any Town of Cary community center as well as Town Hall and the Public Works & Utilities Operations Center. Locate the drop off box, place the battery in the bag provided for you at the box, seal the bag, and place your battery the box. The spent rechargeable batteries are sent to the recycling facility where the recovered materials can be used to make new products such as new batteries and stainless steel products such as silverware.
"Rechargeable batteries contain hazardous materials such as lithium, nickel, cadmium, and lead and should not be placed in a landfill because of possible contamination," said Town of Cary Recycling Coordinator Karen Hales. "This new program is one more example of the Town of Cary’s comprehensive philosophy of preserving and protecting our finite natural resources."
Rechargeable batteries are commonly found in cordless power tools, cellular and cordless phones, laptop computers, camcorders, digital cameras, and remote control toys. The actual rechargeable battery chemistries being accepted are Nickel Cadmium (Ni-Cd), Nickel Metal Hydride (Ni-MH), Lithium Ion (Li-ion), Small Sealed Lead (Pb) (weighing less than 2 lbs./1 kg).
Cary’s new service is being added at no cost to the Town since RBRC provides the drop off boxes and collects the spent batteries at no charge to the Town.
