CARY WRAPS UP GARDEN SUPPLY FIRE ISSUES
CARY, NC – Fire officials’ preliminary investigation points to an electrical cause for last Tuesday’s fire at the Garden Supply Company in Cary. While the specific origin is yet to be determined, officials believe that it likely involves one of three electrical appliances --an air conditioning unit, a dehumidifier, and an attic fan--in the attic of the store. The final report is expected late this week.
On June 4th at 2:55 p.m. a passing motorist called Cary 9-1-1 reporting that smoke was coming from one of the buildings of the nursery located at 1421 Old Apex Road. The fire was under control before 4 p.m. that same day and the business reopened a few days later.
Pierce Manufacturing of Appleton, Wisconsin has assumed responsibility for the structural failure of a Town of Cary aerial truck’s ladder, which collapsed at the scene with two firefighters in the bucket of the extended ladder. Pierce will replace the ladder apparatus of the 1998 truck; the rest of the truck was determined to be sound. Pierce has supplied the Cary Fire Department with a loaner aerial truck until the repairs can be made and the Cary truck can be returned to service, which should take about two months. The loaner truck is at Fire Station 3 and crews are training on it this week before it goes into service in a few days.
Firefighters Tim Gouge and Todd Dollar, who were in the bucket of the ladder when it collapsed, are doing well and will return to regular shift duty this Thursday.
