SET ASIDE TIME TO CELEBRATE OUR ENVIRONMENT

CARY, NC – Make plans now to participate in the Town of Cary’s FREE four-day, hands-on celebration of the environment, April 18-21, 2002. The long weekend-extended event, which includes Arbor Day and Earth Day, will take place at several times and locations around town and includes educational and recreational experiences designed to raise awareness and appreciation for the environment.

"By choosing to formally participate in these national celebrations, we hope to convey the Town's recognition of the universal importance of a healthy and sustainable environment," said Town of Cary Recycling Coordinator Karen Hales. "We want to promote citizen awareness and understanding of the range of environmentally related programs and services being provided by the Town and other local-impact organizations, and we hope to promote good environmental stewardship at multiple levels—from individual to local, regional, national, and even global."

Volunteer for Cary Day

Looking for a volunteer experience, community service project, conservation project, or just a way to give back to the local environment? The Town is sponsoring three community outreach projects to celebrate Earth Day.

"Storm Drain Stenciling" (ages 10 and up)--Cary has thousands of storm drains, which empty into the Neuse River or Cape Fear River watersheds. The Town is committed to being the first local government to have all its drains marked with the message, "Flows to Neuse River" or "Flows to Cape Fear River". Bring yourself, your family, or group and help label the drains in local neighborhoods. Wear old clothes. Spray paint and stencils will be provided. To register yourself or your group, call (919) 469-4038.

"Litter Sweep" (ages 12 and up) - Join forces with citizens across the state and take pride in a clean and beautiful community! Bring yourself, your family, or group and help clean the litter from our roadways. Wear old clothes. Trash bags, recycle bags and gloves are provided. To register yourself or your group, call (919) 469-4090.

"Hemlock Bluffs Trail Workday" (ages 6 and up) - Join forces with the Nature Center staff to assist with trail maintenance and improvements. By doing so, you will aid the Preserve in its conservation efforts and you will improve the experience of many future visitors. Help maintain the trails that you and so many have grown to love. Participants should bring gloves, rakes, and wheelbarrows if you have them. Be prepared for a sweaty workout! Pre-registration is required. Call (919) 387-5980 to register yourself or your group for this very worthwhile effort.
