FESTIVAL IN CARY HIGHLIGHTS THE HISPANIC COMMUNITY


CARY, NC--Culturas Unidas and East Cary Middle School will hold their first Community Festival at East Cary Middle School (ECMS) on Saturday, May 18, 2002 from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. (Rain date is Saturday, May 25). The Community Festival will be held at ECMS's soccer field, at the north side of the school. ECMS is located at 1111 SE Maynard Road, between Cary Town Blvd and Chatham St. The festival will feature a flea market, soccer exhibition, raffles, food, entertainment and activities for children. Admission is $1 for adults, children 12 and under are free. This is a fundraising event and proceeds will be used to provide scholarships for student programs at ECMS. People of all cultures are invited to participate.

Manuel Gil, Executive Director of Culturas Unidas, presents a mentoring program called Nuevos Amigos (New Friends) at ECMS. It stresses some of the assets or skills from Creating Assets Reaching Youth (C.A.R.Y.). "This program has been a great success because of the support of Principal Matt Wright, the counselors and teachers at ECMS," said Gil.

Culturas Unidas, meaning United Cultures in Spanish, is a non-profit organization dedicated to improving the quality of life of the Hispanic/Latino population of Cary and its surrounding areas through outreach, educational programs, and advocacy. Culturas Unidas y East Cary Middle School tendrán su primer festival de la comunidad. El festival incluirá una "pulga" (Mercado ambulante), rifas, comida, entretenimiento y actividades para los niños. Este es un evento para recaudar fondos y crear becas que ayuden a los estudiantes de la escuela que forman parte del grupo de inglés como segundo idioma. Invitamos a la comunidad a participar como exhibidores de productos o servicios, vendedores, artistas y como voluntarios.

La admisión es un dólar por persona y los niños menores de 12 años entran gratis.
