FOR THE 15th YEAR IN A ROW, CARY BUDGET TAKES NATIONAL AWARD

CARY, NC – The Town of Cary has once again received national recognition for one of its most significant financial documents—the Budget.

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA) has issued the Distinguished Budget Presentation Award to the Town’s Budget Office for developing a document that meets or exceeds national standards in functioning as 1) a policy document, 2) a financial plan, 3) an operations plan, and 4) a communications device. This is the only national awards program for governmental budgeting.

"We’re very proud of the excellent work our budget staff does throughout the year," said Town Manager Bill Coleman. "Their detailed analyses, multi-year projections, and performance measurement focus help ensure the most effective use of taxpayer dollars in achieving Council’s vision for the community."

Along with the budget award, a Certificate of Recognition is issued to the individual chiefly responsible for the receiving the award. The Cary Town Council will recognize the budget staff at tonight’s regular Town Council meeting.

"While we appreciate the GFOA recognizing the budget staff, those of us in budget really see this as an award for the hard work of all the staff in the organization," said Cary’s Budget Director Scott Fogleman. "Receiving the award speaks to everyone’s ability to effectively use the budget to communicate the goals and priorities of the Town and to show how resources are allocated to provide services to citizens."

The budget, as well as most other Town documents, are available for public review at Town Hall during regular business hours or anytime via the Town’s Web site, www.townofcary.org.

The GFOA is a nonprofit professional association serving 13,000 government finance professionals throughout North America. During the 18 years of the GFOA’s Distinguished Budget Presentation Awards program, only about 800 entities have been chosen for the honor.
