CARY ATTACK CAT WAS RABID

CARY, NC – The cat that attacked several people in Cary early Monday has tested positive for the virus that causes rabies, according to a report filed today by the State veterinarian’s office In Raleigh. Anyone in the apartment complex who may have been bitten or scratched by the cat should contact Cary Animal Control immediately to file a report and their health care provider for treatment. Today, people exposed to rabies can generally be successfully treated with medication.

Around 1:20 a.m. Monday, Cary Police officers responded to two 9-1-1 calls for help with a cat that was attacking residents of Hidden Oaks apartments off Northeast Maynard Road. Erica Lynn Hughes, 23, and Michael Trussel, 26, reported being bitten and scratched by the feral female calico cat. Officials with the Cary Police Department took the cat into custody shortly after arriving on the scene. The cat, which subsequently died, was taken to the State lab for testing that same day.

Both of the known victims are being contacted by Cary Animal Control to make sure they begin treatment. Officials are also posting flyers in the apartment complex advising residents of the confirmation of a rabid animal in their vicinity.

Cary Animal Control advises residents to never encourage contact with an animal you do not know, wild or domestic. If you are scratched or bitten, you should notify police immediately.

In addition, pet owners should use caution when dealing with any pet that may have been harmed by a suspicious animal. Wear gloves and other protective clothing when helping your injured pet, and stay away from any bodily fluids, especially saliva. As always, avoid any wild animal and have all pets--cats, dogs, and horses--vaccinated against the disease. Seek help immediately if you or your pets are bitten by any animal, and notify officials as soon as possible.
