$5.5 MILLION PHASE II OF CARY TENNIS CENTER TO BREAK GROUND SATURDAY

CARY, NC – Groundbreaking ceremonies for Phase II of the Cary Tennis Center, 2500 Carpenter Upchurch Road will take place at 10:00 AM on Saturday, March 10. After remarks by Cary Town Council members and the Recreation and Cultural Resources Advisory Board Chair, a design presentation, and the groundbreaking, an official ACC conference match between the NC State University and Florida State University men’s tennis teams will follow at 11:00 AM on the existing courts.

Phase II--a $5.5 million project—includes 22 courts for exhibition and teaching, a tennis center building with pro shop, offices, meeting space, concessions, and locker rooms, and parking on a 19.66 acre site. A combination of grants, general funds, donations, and bonds are being used to finance Phase II. Construction is expected to be completed by early 2002.

Phase I of the Tennis Center was finished in April 2000 at a cost of $818,000 and included eight courts as well as a shelter with restrooms.

A tennis facility was identified as a need in the Town of Cary’s Parks, Greenways and Bikeways Master Plan. Besides being a facility for use by Cary citizens and organized groups and a place to provide training to participants in the sport, a tournament-quality facility will attract higher quality professionals to participate in competitive play. Attracting tournaments to the area will provide an economic benefit to the entire area.

Designers on the project include Elam, Todd, D’Ambrosi (landscape architect), Cline Design Associates (architect for main building), Cherry Huffman Architects (architect for restroom/shelter building), Triangle Tennis Services, Inc. (tennis consultant), DCF Engineering (structural engineer), H. J. Gilleece & Associates (civil engineer), and Triangle Engineering Services (electrical engineer). The construction contractors will be R. P. Construction Co. (general), AAA Electrical Co. (electrical), Eakins Plumbing Co. (plumbing), and Acorn Industrial (mechanical).
