CARY PD OFFERS HOLIDAY CRIME PREVENTION TIPS

CARY, NC – While it might seem a little in conflict with "tis the season to be jolly", Cary police are nonetheless encouraging everyone to not let the holiday spirit lull you into unsafe behavior. Whether traveling, shopping, or attending holiday events, be diligent about your safety and security by following these tips for a safe and happy holiday season.

If you are traveling:

  • Set an automatic timer for your lights
  • Ask a neighbor to watch your home and pick up mail and newspapers

If you are out for the evening:

  • Turn on lights and the radio or TV
  • Lock all doors and windows
  • Keep packages or gifts out of sight

If you are shopping:

  • Stay alert and be aware of your surroundings at all times
  • Park in well-lighted spaces, lock your car doors, and place packages out of sight in the trunk or under seats
  • Do not carry large amounts of cash; pay with a check or credit card if possible
  • Carry purses close to the body, not dangling by the straps.
  • Put wallets in an inside coat or front pants pocket
  • Teach children to go to a police officer or security guard if they get lost or separated

If you are at home:

  • Turn on outside lights to deter burglars
  • Report suspicious behavior to the police

"The Cary Police Department places a great deal of emphasis on being proactive in conflict resolution, crime prevention, and community involvement," said Lieutenant Chris Hoina. "Although the Town of Cary is the sixth safest of 322 large cities in the nation according to the 7th Annual Morgan Quitno Safest City ranking, we urge citizens not to become complacent or careless."

This holiday season, the Cary Police, in conjunction with the Chamber of Commerce, is also offering a special seminar to business owners and managers to learn how to prevent crime in their businesses and safeguard their employees and assets. These seminars—which are not open to the general public--will take place at the Cary Chamber of Commerce on Wednesday, December 5 from 8 – 9 a.m. and Monday, December 10 from 2 – 3 p.m.
