CARY LOOKS FOR WITNESSES TO MORNING GREASE SPILL
CARY, NC – The Town of Cary’s Police Department is asking for your help in identifying those responsible for an early morning grease spill on Kildaire Farm Road from High Meadow Drive to Tryon Road and from Tryon onto US Hwy 1. The light, kitchen-type grease was likely spilling from a tanker, garbage, or other large truck driving in and around Salt Box Village and Shoppes of Kildaire shopping centers in Cary and then south through town and onto the highway towards Sanford.
"This was a tremendous amount of grease being spilled over miles of heavily traveled roads," said Cary Public Works Division Director Mike Bajorek. "We’re hoping that someone driving, running, or working in the area saw this happening, probably between 5:00AM and 7:00AM."
At 7:44AM, Cary 911 received a call from a citizen reporting a trail of grease originating from the Lone Star Steakhouse and Saloon at 1301 Kildaire Farm Road. Cary Fire and Police responded as well as Town of Cary Public Works crews which spread about 40 tons of sand atop the grease along the southbound lanes of Kildaire Farm Road out to the US Highway 1 and 64 interchange. Street sweepers then removed the grease-laden sand from the roadway and took it to Town facilities for special disposal. During the cleanup crews placed booms along the curb to keep the grease from reaching storm drains and catch basins.
With nearly two dozen staff members and one dozen heavy vehicles involved in the effort, the Town of Cary spent an estimated $10,000 on the cleanup, which was complete around 2:00 PM. This cost is in addition to costs incurred by NC DOT, which handled the cleanup south along US 1 from the Tryon Road interchange.
Cary Crime Stoppers will pay up to $2,500 for information leading to the identification and apprehension of the individual(s) responsible for the spill. Anyone with information may contact Crime Stoppers at 226-CRIM(E), pressing option 3 for Cary or contact Lt. Chris Hoina, Criminal Investigations, at 469-4017. All calls will be kept CONFIDENTIAL at caller's request.
