GREASE SPILL SNARLS TRAFFIC IN CARY
CARY, NC – Cary Fire, Police, and Public Works crews are responding to a grease spill on Kildaire Farm Road from High Meadow Drive past Tryon Road. At 7:44 AM, Cary 911 received a call from a citizen reporting a grease spill near the Lone Star Steakhouse and Saloon at 1301 Kildaire Farm Road.
Town of Cary Public Works crews are working against the clock to beat predicted rain in cleaning up the grease spill. Crews are spreading 60 - 70 tons of sand along the southbound lanes of Kildaire Farm Road out to the US Highway 1 and 64 interchange. Street sweepers will later remove the grease-laden sand. In addition to sand, booms are being placed to block the grease from reaching storm drains and catch basins. North Carolina Department of Transportation crews are managing cleanup efforts from the Tryon Road interchange on US Highway 1 and 64.
One minor accident has been reported to the Cary Police Department as a result of the spill. Southbound traffic on Kildaire Farm Road has been reduced to one lane. Cleanup is predicted to occur throughout the day and motorists are encouraged to avoid the area.
Other agencies involved with the cleanup effort are Wake County Public Safety, Wake County Environmental Health, North Carolina Department of Environment and Natural Resources, and the Environmental Protection Agency.
At the time of this release, investigators were unable to affix responsibility for the spill.
