PARENTS WARNED OF POTENTIAL CHILD PREDATOR

CARY, NC – Cary Police are asking for your help in locating a man who may have attempted to assault a girl in Cary last week.  On November 9, the 10-year old girl was playing at dusk with two other children in a parking lot of Preston Reserve apartments on Barkwick Valley Lane in northwest Cary (Cary Parkway and James Jackson Avenue).  The girl and one of her two playmates went into the nearby woods to retrieve their ball.  The playmate returned to the parking lot but before the girl left the woods, she reports that a man grabbed her by the arm, told her to be quiet, and attempted to remove her sweater.  The girl screamed, broke loose, and ran back to her friends.  Shaken but unharmed, the girl called Cary Police.

The suspect is described as a heavy-set male with a dark complexion, about 6-feet tall with a potbelly, hazel eyes, and having an accent.  He was wearing black jeans, shoes, and sweater as well as a black ski mask with white on the top.  The wooded area where he was seen is frequented by children and adults who are mountain biking and hiking.

Cary Police are encouraging parents to review safety tips with their children, including:

·        Be wary of strangers;

·        Don’t stray away from home alone;

·        Let others know where you are and where you’re going at all times;

·        If strangers approach asking for you to come with them, flee;

·        Contact an adult or police immediately if someone tries to take you away or hurt you.

Cary Crimestoppers will pay up to $2,500 for information leading to the identification and apprehension of the man responsible for this crime. Anyone with information may contact Crimestoppers at 226-CRIME (226-2746) or Investigator Travis Baker at 469-4320. All calls will be kept CONFIDENTIAL at caller's request.
