ART QUILT EXHIBIT AT PAGE-WALKER

CARY, NC – "Art Quilts: Narrative Form", a juried gallery exhibition of thirty-four art quilts which each tell a story, will be shown at the Page-Walker Arts and History Center in Cary, NC, May 4-30, 2001. The opening reception will be on Sunday, May 6 from 2-4 PM. The quilts were chosen by curator Amy Stewart Winsor for their artistic merit and the message each one conveys to the viewer. Twenty-three artists from nine states, the District of Columbia and two Canadian provinces, are represented in the exhibition.

With fabric and stitching, each creation relates a story, whether light-hearted (as in Katharine Brainard's "Bathroom Floor/Pick Up Your Underwear") or somber and thought-provoking (as represented by child-abuse survivor Laura Lundrigan's "In Spite of It All"). From the huge "Suicide Quilt" by Brainard (105" high by 105" wide) to the tiny wall hangings of Marcia Gragg ("Portal" is only 6" by 5"), the variety of colors and themes will impress the viewer with the possibilities of fiber art.

The following Triangle area artists are represented, with quilts depicting the themes listed:

Marni Goldshlag, Durham, NC (dealing with the death of her mother); Delores Hamilton, Cary, NC (the opportunities faced at retirement); Lyric Kinard, Cary, NC (stresses and rewards of motherhood); Susie Mallard, Raleigh, NC (infertility); Julie Mullin, Apex, NC (infertility, grief); Jacqueline Nouveau, Chapel Hill, NC (death of a friend); Susie Williams, New Hill, NC (joys of her backyard); Amy Stewart Winsor, Cary, NC (religious beliefs; stresses over housework).
