FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE June 9, 2000
CARY POLICE KICK OFF CITIZEN VOLUNTEER PROGRAM
Cary, NC Beginning Monday, June 12, 25 citizen volunteers will be making a personal commitment to volunteer eight hours each month to assist the Cary Police Department by providing a variety of services. All volunteers have completed the Departments 12-week Citizens Police Academy and have received six hours of volunteer training in which they learned to prepare basic police reports and to respond to inquiries from members of the public. The volunteers are formally known as members of the "CAP" Team--"Citizens Assisting Police".
Cary Police Chief W. J. Hunter said of the volunteers; "We are extremely excited about this partnership and what may be accomplished through it. We are equally excited about our volunteers and their willingness to commit so unselfishly their time and energy. This is another way of enhancing our Police Departments long-time, effective practice of Community Policing."
CAP volunteers will be assigned to the Cary Police Service Center located across from the Radio Shack in the Cary Towne Center. As part of their duties, CAP Members will complete basic police reports on lost property, petty larcenies as well as provide general information and directions to visitors of the Service Center. The Police Department will host a "Volunteer Appreciation Reception" and "Open House" at the Service Center on Wednesday, June 14th from 2:00 PM until 4 PM. The entire community is encouraged to visit.
