Spring Sewer Cleaning to Break Downtown Cary's Silent Nights This Week

NEWS RELEASE

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE May 24, 1999

SPRING SEWER CLEANING TO BREAK
DOWNTOWN CARY’S SILENT NIGHTS THIS WEEK

CARY, NC – This week’s night air will hum with the sounds of sewer main spring cleaning in portions of downtown Cary’. Town of Cary Public Works crews will be cleaning sewer mains with jet equipment all this week as part of a comprehensive sewer prediction and prevention program. Earlier in May Town crews hand-delivered notices to affected residents notifying them of the work as the sewer cleaning equipment emits a 110 dB sound.

Because most of the work needs to be done on downtown streets that are heavily traveled during the day and on weekends, Cary crews will be doing their sewer cleaning during the evening hours. Cleaning that must occur in close proximity to residents will be done during the early evening, beginning around 7:00 PM and ending by 10:00 PM. Cleaning of lines farther away from homes will continue into the late evening/early morning hours but end no later than 5:00 AM.

"We’ve done our best to balance the needs of the motoring public with the needs of our downtown residents," said Public Works Division Director Mike Bajorek. "So far, everyone that we’ve heard from is very happy that we’re doing prevention work in their area."

In their FY99 budget, the Cary Town Council approved $100,000 to videotape—or TV--main line sewers to locate faults and defects before blockages and overflows occur. Underground Camera Services (UCS) Inc. was selected to perform this preventive and predictive work for the Town and has TV’d approximately 20,000 linear feet of sewer main line to date. The agreement between the Town and the UCS calls for the Town to hydraulically clean sewer lines prior to televising so any defect can be clearly identified by the underground television cameras.
