"Sport" to Play in Cary
CARY, NC The Town of Cary invites children of all ages, families, comedy lovers, and sports fans who wouldn't normally look to the theater for entertainment to enjoy a weekend of SPORT--a laugh-a-minute physical comedy about the commercialization of sports. From the stages of Europe, Asia, and South America, SPORT debuts in Cary for two shows this weekend: Friday, May 28th at 7:30 PM at the Sertoma Amphitheater in Bond Park, 305 High House Road, and on Saturday, May 29th at 7:30 PM at the Cary Community Center, 404 N. Academy Street. Tickets to the show are $3 for Adults and $1 for children. No advanced sales--all tickets will be sold at the door.
Produced by Greensboro's theater troupe "Simon Pure", company member John Cruchfield, Eric Johnson, and Brandon Roberts play representatives of "Slastic", a fictitious sporting goods company that makes everything from tennis rackets to life-sized bowling pins. In demonstrating the products,
the athletes fumble their way through every sport imaginable, including a three-man boxing match and a tennis game involving a tennis ball which looks like a giant toy. This fast-paced, highly energetic show is filled with physical comedy and mime, interspersed with occasional voice-overs, jingles, and audience participation.
Critics and audiences have raved: "SPORT is a side splitting caricature of the world of modern professional athletics. Even those who grimace at the thought of watching ESPN will come out of the play chuckling." Kelly Miller of The Paper writes, "They are highly energetic and a complete joy to watch. Their characterization never misses, and neither does their timing." One audience member exclaims, "SPORT is so uproariously funny that the membranes of my head hurt from laughing."
