TOWN CO-SPONSORS WEEK-LONG MARTIN LUTHER KING, JR. CELEBRATION

 

CARY, NC – Cary’s MLK, JR. DREAMFEST "99—a week of special events celebrating the life and vision of Martin Luther King, JR--will be held January 9th-16th. Most events are free and will be held on the Cary Town Hall Campus on N. Academy Street and at Cary High School on Walnut Street. DREAMFEST ’99 includes musical and theatrical presentations as well as panel discussions, awards presentations, and a unity march through downtown Cary.

"We’re very excited about participating in this year’s events," said Town Manager Bill Coleman. "The MLK Task Force has planned a wide variety of meaningful activities to benefit our community as well as surrounding areas."

To spread the word about DREAMFEST ’99, the Town of Cary has prepared and devoted a special section of its website to the work of Dr. King and the Cary MLK Task Force. This information can be accessed in the WHAT’S NEW section of the site, www.townofcary.org. This is the fourth annual Cary DREAMFEST.

  • Saturday January 9th, 7:00 PM, Cary Town Council Chambers

DREAM OF DEMOCRACY PANEL DISCUSSION

A distinguished panel of guests discusses "The Challenge of Racism and Race Relations as it affects the Cary Community, Future, and Welfare of Our Nation". Discussion will be cablecast live on Cary’s Town Hall TV (cable channel 11) and will be repeated on Sunday afternoon at 3:00 PM and Sunday evening at 7:30 PM.

DREAM OF BEAUTY EXHIBIT

Artists and art collectors exhibit works daily

DREAM OF ACHIEVEMENT AWARDS BANQUET

Honors an individual with outstanding achievements and service and six local youth who have shown leadership and concern for social justice and community inclusiveness. Tickets to the Awards Banquet may be purchased by telephoning 388-2079.

DREAM OF HISTORY DISCUSSION WITH LOCAL AUTHOR

Coffee and an evening of remembrance and reflection with Ella Arrington Williams-Vinson, the author of BOTH SIDES OF THE TRACKS: A PROFILE OF THE COLORED COMMUNITY IN CARY.

DREAM OF EXPRESSION MUSICAL EXTRAVAGANZA

Local youth and other artists lift their voices in a concert of praise and tribute directed by Christine Lantroop.

DREAM OF BEAUTY EXHIBIT AND RECEPTION

Exhibitors will meet with the public at a reception at the Gallery.

DREAM OF INSPIRATION DRAMATIC PERFORMANCES

Two nights of quality theater production will be presented to inspire and entertain

DREAM OF JUSTICE UNITY MARCH

Citizens committed to racial harmony can join together in a march that ends at the site of the cultural celebration. This activity is designed to commemorate the non-violent means of protest used during the civil rights movement.

DREAM OF COMMUNITY CULTURAL CELEBRATION

C.T.Viviant, a nationally known civil rights leader, will deliver the keynote address on this exciting day of activities demonstrating the rich variety of ethnic, racial, and religious traditions of Cary citizens. Featured will be a showcase of professional and amateur performers, exhibits, unique products, and delicious food available from vendors, and hands-on activities for preschoolers and young children.
