TOWN MEETS TONIGHT
WITH LANDSCAPERS & PROPERTY MANAGERS
TO DRIVE HOME
CARY WATER CONSERVATION LAWS

CARY, NC – The Town of Cary is heating things up with area landscape professionals, irrigation specialists, and property managers to make sure they get the summer season started off right by understanding and complying with laws on water conservation sure to be strictly enforced as Cary braces to meet this summer’s peak water demands. Tonight at 7:00 PM in the Cary Town Council Chambers, Town water conservation staff will discuss three ordinances that directly affect these groups. They will also outline potential water restrictions that may go into effect if water customers do not use wise water ways. The three ordinances to be reviewed tonight are Waste While Watering, Rain Sensors on Automatic Irrigation Systems, and Tampering with Water or Sewer Systems.

"We wanted to talk to this group before we unveil this year’s summer water campaign to make sure that they were clear on Cary’s water situation and the seriousness with which we plan to enforce our regulations," said Cary Water Conservation Specialist Jennifer Platt. "With everyone working together last year, we were able to curb use and meet demand. We have that same goal this year, even though Cary’s population has increased."

Waste While Watering prohibits "watering so that water falls directly onto impervious surfaces to the extent that running water leaves the property", and "watering to the extent that water is allowed to accumulate on the surface of the ground and leave the property." A violation of this ordinance could result in a $100 penalty for the first day and increase by $100 for each additional day

Rain Sensor on Automatic Irrigation Systems requires that all automatic irrigation customers have a rain sensor to prevent the system from cutting on during the rain. A violation of this ordinance also carries a $100 penalty for the first day and increases by $100 for each additional day.

Tampering with Water or Sewer Systems states that the only people authorized to turn water meters on and off are Town of Cary employees and that every irrigation system should have a turn-off valve somewhere between the water meter and the backflow preventer valve. This law has civil penalties of $1,000 for each offense.
