CARY ENCOURAGES HOLIDAY REMNANT RECYCLING

CARY, NC -- The Town of Cary wants to give your Christmas tree and other holiday items a second life through recycling. Through January 23, 1999, trees may be dropped off at one of three special collection centers--Citizens Convenience Center (old public works)--313 Dixon Avenue, ball fields 5,6, & 7 at Bond Park--801 High House Road, and Oak Grove Elementary School--10401 Penny Road.

While the Town will chip trees into mulch for use in Cary parks and greenways at the first two collection sites, Mason’s Nurseries is donating a chipper for use on January 9th at the Oak Grove site. Mason’s donation is saving the Town more than $250. In exchange for serving as a drop-off point, Oak Grove will be able to keep the chips from what will likely be 1000 trees recycled there that day.

The Town will also conduct a town-wide collection of Christmas trees on Saturday, January 9th. Cary officials are asking citizens to place their trees curbside by Friday evening, January 8th. Trees should be free of ornaments, lights, tinsel, and other decorations.

Finally, the Wake County Solid Waste Management Division, in cooperation with Phoenix Resources and Davey Tree & Lawn Care, is sponsoring a "Christmas Wrap-Up" collection at the Raleigh K-Mart on the corner of Blue Ridge Rd and Western Blvd on January 9th from 9:00 AM – 2:00 PM. Items to be accepted include: Christmas trees, wrapping paper, bows, Christmas cards, corrugated cardboard, glossy magazines and catalogs, polystyrene (peanuts & ridged molding form), chipboard (cereal boxes, cardboard, shoeboxes), and SBS (medicine boxes that are white in color when torn).

This and other recycling information is available on Cary’s website, www.townofcary.org.
