SCARINGELLI TO BECOME FIRST FEMALE CAPTAIN IN CARY PD HISTORY

CARY, NC -- Pat Scaringelli has been named the first female police captain in the history of the Town of Cary. Scaringelli, 36, fills the captain space vacated by W.J. Hunter when he became Cary’s Police Chief in August. Cary’s only other captain’s slot is currently held by Jim Carver. Scaringelli’s promotion becomes effective on October 11, 1998.

"I’m very proud to have been selected for this position and look forward to working closely with Chief Hunter and Captain Carver to achieve the department’s goals," said Scaringelli.

Hired in as a patrol officer in Cary by Chief John Boles in 1986, Scaringelli served as one of the department’s first DARE officers in the late 1980’s, line sergeant in the early 1990’s, and was the first female officer in the department to be promoted to lieutenant in 1994. Since that time, she has headed the department’s Support Services Division which includes Animal Control, Communications, Records, Training & Accreditation, and Community Services.

Scaringelli holds a Bachelor of Applied Science in Criminal Justice degree from Campbell University. She has an Associate of Arts degree from Wake Technical Community College and additional graduate level coursework with the University of Virginia and North Carolina State University. Scaringelli has also participated in law enforcement training programs with the FBI in Quantico, VA.

"Pat was the top candidate in our assessment process and has a solid record of achievement with our agency," said Cary Police Chief W.J. Hunter. "I'm proud of the job Pat has consistently done for our police department and this community!"

Scaringelli was selected from a pool of six Cary PD lieutenants who qualified and applied for the promotion. Each candidate had to submit an essay as well as be interviewed by a law enforcement panel which included outside panelists.
