BLOCK LEADERS TO BE HONORED FOR COMMUNITY SERVICE

CARY, NC -- The Town of Cary will thank its first crop of 111 Block Leaders for their contribution to the Town’s successful summer water conservation campaign this weekend. Cary’s Block Leader Appreciation Lunch will be held this Sunday, October 18th at 1:00-2:30 PM at the Kiwanis Shelter in Bond Park. The luncheon marks the end of the first phase of Cary’s Block Leader Program which was revived in April on Earth Day.

"I’ve really enjoyed working with this group of extremely dedicated citizens," said Water Conservation Assistant Marie DelForge. "Their contribution to Cary’s environmental effort has been invaluable."

Cary’s Block Leader Program is a grassroots communications effort between the Town and neighborhoods designed to give residents the latest information on important issues facing their community. Block Leaders spend between three and five hours a month learning about specific Town programs and sharing what they’ve learned with their neighbors. Subjects include water conservation, recycling, and other environmental topics.

Cary first used the block leader approach in the late 1980’s to jump start its new recycling program, now one of the most successful in the nation. The block leader effort was such a success that Town officials decided to bring it back this year as part of the Town’s comprehensive water conservation program.

Sunday’s lunch will be held regardless of weather conditions.
