Converting to carts: Online schedule helps customers remember when to roll out recycling

We’ve started delivering our new recycling carts, and customers are making the switch to  their new 65-gallon rolling receptacles.

If you haven’t received your cart, you can find out when it will be delivered by using the Maps Online feature at www.townofcary.org. Just type in your address to see the approximate date your cart will be delivered.

You’ll receive a notice on your garbage cart the week before your new recycling cart is delivered. Continue to use your existing recycling bin until your cart arrives.

Your cart will provide three times the space for recycling as your old bin. Once you have your cart, you can recycle these new materials:

Chipboard (such as cereal boxes and paper towel rolls)

   Telephone books

   Mixed paper (no shredded paper)

Junk mail (including window envelopes and post cards).

The carts will provide added efficiency and allow us to  pick up your recycling every other week using an automated truck, just as we do for trash collection. Garbage and yard waste will still be picked up every week.

A recycling schedule will be provided with your new cart and is available on the Town’s Web site. For more details about Cary's switch to carts, visit www.townofcary.org.

Summerfest features Sinatra, aerialists

Once again, our own Koka Booth Amphitheatre provides the spectacular summer home for our state’s symphony. The North Carolina Symphony will perform spectacular music in a beautiful, natural setting each Saturday evening from May 30 through July 18.

One unique feature this year will be a Summerfest concert without the symphony: On June 13, singer/pianist Michael Feinstein brings his Sinatra Project celebrating the music of old Blue Eyes for one special evening.

Other highlights in this year’s season include:

     The Red Clay Ramblers, June 6 – North Carolina ’s favorite folk band;

     Cirque de la Symphonie, June 27 – Aerialists fly overhead as the orchestra plays classical masterpieces;

Play! A Video Game Symphony, July 11 – Featuring music from blockbuster video games and incredible graphics.

Summerfest also features four other great concerts including the free July 4th celebration!

     For more, visit www.BoothAmphitheatre.com.

Bud Bits

  • We maintain all traffic signals in the towns of Cary and Morrisville, and a portion of traffic signals in the town of Apex . To notify us of a malfunctioning traffic light, call 469-4090 during the week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. ; after hours and on weekends and holidays, call 469-4012.

  • Thinking about hosting a yard sale? Remember signs cannot be posted on light poles, trees, traffic signals, medians, street corners or in ditches or intersections (public rights-of-way). For questions, call 469-4082.

Friends of the festivals

Our Spring Daze and Lazy Daze festivals receive a lot of support from the community, boasting great attendance and participation. Now there’s another way you can get involved: Become a Friend of the Festivals.

Donations from the Friends of the Festivals will contribute to offsetting the cost of producing each festival and assist in putting more money back into the community through the Lazy Daze Grants Program.

Each year, proceeds from the Lazy Daze Arts and Crafts Festival are given back to the community in the form of grants. During the past 32 years, more than $444,000 has been returned to the Cary community through this program and more than 67 nonprofit organizations and projects have been impacted.

For full details on how to become a Friend of the Festivals, call 469-4061 or visit www.townofcary.org.

Play ball in the fall

Youth baseball and softball leagues for boys and girls ages 10 to 16 will be offered for the first time this fall. All fall youth baseball and softball leagues will be “player pitch”.

Participants in youth baseball leagues will be placed in groups based on their age as of April 30, 2009 . For youth softball leagues, the participant’s age as of January 1, 2009 will be used.

Registration will begin June 22 and run through July 11. Practices are tentatively scheduled to begin on August 10 with games taking place in September and October. The cost is $44 for Cary residents and $69 for non-residents.

For more information, visit the Youth Sports League section at www.townofcary.org. For questions, call 469-4062 or e-mail  Ted.Jeffcoate@townofcary.org.

Soak up the savings with waterwise landscaping

This summer, we’re encouraging you to consider a water-wise landscape as a way to “Soak in the Savings,” the theme of our 2009 Beat the Peak water conservation campaign.

Properly designing your landscape can conserve water and help you reduce your water bill. From the design to the irrigation devices and plant choices, there are many ways that you can soak in the savings.

Our upcoming WaterWise workshops will focus on these outdoor water conservation topics, starting with innovative irrigation devices on June 3, choosing the right plants  and correct placement for reduced water use on June 6 (and June 20), and designing an environmentally-sound, waterwise landscape on June 9.

Workshops are free, and you can register by calling 469-4090. For more, visit Water Conservation at www.townofcary.org.

Planning for Dreamfest 2010

We need volunteers to help plan MLK Jr. Dreamfest 2010, our annual celebration of the life, work and vision of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Dreamfest 2010 is a series of events and activities planned as a means to educate, inspire and challenge us to create a welcoming, inclusive community that lives together in an atmosphere of cooperation, respect and understanding.

To volunteer or for additional information, call 460-4963.

Wash the car, water the lawn

When your car is ready for its next cleaning, consider taking it to a commercial car wash. A commercial car wash is the best place to wash your car because the water at these facilities is collected, recycled and treated at a Cary Water Reclamation Facility.

If you prefer to wash your car yourself, try to do so in an area where the water can flow to grass or a landscaped area, not to a storm drain.  You’ll also be helping to conserve water by using the water twice - for the car and to water your yard!
