More space, more items

The shift from recycling bins to recycling carts is about to begin.

Carts will be distributed throughout an eight-week period starting in April. We'll place a notice on your garbage cart the week before your new recycling cart is to be delivered. Continue to use your existing recycling bin until you receive a cart.

The switch to carts will provide you with more room to recycle. The new 65-gallon rollout carts each have more than three times the volume of your current bin.

Moving to carts will also allow additional types of materials to be collected at the curb. Chipboard (such as cereal boxes), telephone books, and junk mail (including postcards and window envelopes) will be added to our list of acceptable items for recycling once the carts have been delivered.

We’ll be using automated trucks to pick up your recycling similar to the automated trucks that collect your garbage. Automated collection is the safest, most efficient, equitable and economical way for the Town to collect recycling.

When you receive your cart, use it for recycling at the curb every other week on the same day as your current solid waste collection day. Remember, your garbage and yard waste will continue to be collected every week.

A calendar with the recycling collection schedule will be provided with your new cart.

For details, visit www.townofcary.org. Additional details about the program will be provided in each BUD through June 2009.

Cary offers incentives for waterwise landscapes

Our Turf Buy Back program offers eligible property owners a one-time, $500 incentive to replace a minimum of 1,000 square feet of historically irrigated turf with a warm season grass such as Zoysia, Centipede, Bermuda , or St. Augustine , or convert it to a natural area.

You may also apply for a permit for a three-week exception to the alternate day watering schedule from April 15 through August 15 when you plant warm season grass.

Stopping distance

We want to remind you that our blue C-Tran buses, vans, and sedans stop frequently as they travel throughout Cary . When you are driving behind one of our vehicles, please leave a safe distance between your car and C-Tran and be prepared to stop.

Understanding tornadoes

Peak tornado season in the south is March through May. Tornadoes often strike quickly and with little warning. Get prepared now by designating a safe room in your home: the basement or an interior room with no windows on the first floor.

If you are not at home, do not try to outrun a tornado by car. Get inside a building or lie in a ditch well away from the car.

For more tips, visit Severe Weather at www.townofcary.org.
