Improvements Start on Kildaire Farm Road
Another major road in Cary is getting a facelift this summer.
As part of the NCDOT 2010 Wake County Resurfacing Project, the state-owned Kildaire Farm Road from Walnut Street to Palace Green will be resurfaced and reconfigured for a safer and smoother ride.
The whole four-mile stretch will receive milling, resurfacing and new pavement markings. Crosswalks and pedestrian signals are also planned along the corridor.
A new traffic pattern will be implemented from Maynard Road to Walnut Street. It will be reduced from a four-lane to a three-lane road, with a center turn lane and wide outside lanes for cyclists. These changes will accommodate existing traffic volumes and allow for better mobility for drivers, cyclists and pedestrians.
From now until project completion—early Fall 2010, weather permitting—at least one lane will be open at all times. For real-time traffic updates, go to wink.townofcary.org and follow us on Twitter @TOC_Traffic.

Amphitheatre Hosts First Live Theatre Event
“If music be the food of love, play on…” Shakepeare’s Twelfth Night is coming to Koka Booth Amphitheatre, making it the area’s newest theatrical space.
With three performances between August 26-28, guests will be enchanted by the magical woodland setting as actors bring Shakespeare’s timeless tale to life in a unique way using intricate lighting and atmospheric techniques.
This Shakespeare celebration is the first theatre performance at Booth Amphitheatre in its 10-season history. All shows start at 8 p.m. and tickets are $20 with kids 12 and under free.
Check out Koka Booth Amphitheatre’s complete schedule, from movies to symphonies to concerts, at www.boothamphitheatre.com.

Have an Idea for this Intersection?
Town staff is looking for feedback on the traffic pattern of the Cary Parkway and High House Road intersection.
Consider how this intersection operates now, how it operated in the past and how you think it should operate in the future to accommodate growth and development.
Read about prior studies conducted on the intersection and design alternatives, plus take a quick survey on the intersection by searching “Cary Parkway and High House” at www.townofcary.org, or share your comments by e-mail to intersections@townofcary.org or by mail to Town of Cary Engineering Department, c/o Cary Parkway and High House Road, P.O. Box 8005, Cary, NC 27512.
Feedback will be accepted until August 31.

Practice Backyard Safety
Summer means lots of splashing by the pool and grilling on the deck.
Install a fence around your pool, and be sure that all gates are self-closing and self-latching. Keep throwing aids like poles on both sides of the pool in case of an emergency. Use a pool cover to block access to the pool from kids, pets and other animals.
When grilling, keep a fire extinguisher or garden hose close by in case of a fire. Establish a safety zone around the grill and keep kids and pets outside of it. Never use a grill in a garage, porch or enclosed area that could trap carbon monoxide.
For more building safety tips, check out Inspections & Permits at www.townofcary.org.

Cary Marks National Trails Day with ATT Dedication
More than 150 people gathered for a ribbon-cutting ceremony on June 5 to celebrate the opening of the Chatham County segment of the American Tobacco Trail.
This newest trail segment is a recreation outlet for hikers, cyclists and even equestrians. It’s accessible from dawn to dusk, and parking is available on Pittard Sears Road in Chatham County and White Oak Church Road in Wake County. Don’t forget bring your own water, and consider enjoying the trail with a buddy.
Construction on the 4.7-mile asphalt trail with adjacent compacted granite screenings trail began in 2008. Now that it’s opened, the Town of Cary will maintain the segment for the next five years.
Learn more about this trail and other trails and greenways in Cary at www.townofcary.org.

On Tuesday, August 3, you’re invited to come out and join the nation in celebrating National Night Out, an initiative to promote awareness, safety and neighborhood unity.
From 6-9 p.m., Cary Police will be visiting neighborhood watch programs throughout town to promote neighborhood spirit and police-community partnerships as we fight for a safer community.
All night, Cary Police will meet with neighbors to discuss crime and drug prevention awareness and generate support for our many anti-crime programs. You’ll have the opportunity to meet new Cary Police Officers, get an up-close look at police cars and their equipment and find outt how you can help prevent crime in your neighborhood.
To schedule a visit for your community gathering, contact Community Services Officer Brian Austin at 469-4324, and be sure to check out National Night Out at www.townofcary.org for other organized events within the Town of Cary.

Water Habits to Keep You Fit
When exercising good watering habits, stick to an early morning or late evening routine to reduce the amount of water lost in evaporation.
Be sure to water according to the Alternate Day Watering schedule (even addresses: Wednesday, Friday, Sunday; odd addresses: Tuesday, Thursday, Saturday).
Keep well-hydrated by placing mulch in natural areas to retain moisture and discourage thirsty weeds. Use the right gear-check your automated irrigation system’s rain sensor to make sure it works correctly.
Learn more ways to ‘Exercise Good Water Habits” at Water Conservation at www.townofcary.org.

Do Your Part: Keep Easements Clear
We routinely clear utility easements to prevent tree root penetration into sewer lines, which causes blockages and overflows.
While we notify property owners in advance, we ask that you keep easements clear all the time.
For questions concerning easement locations or improvements, call the Public Works & Utilities Department at 469-4090.

Recycling Tip: Cardboard
Remember to remove all packing material before placing corrugated cardboard in your recycling bin/cart. If you have more cardboard than can fit in your bin/cart, call 469-4090 to schedule a free pick-up to occur on your next garbage collection day. You can also take corrugated cardboard to the Citizen’s Convenience Center, 313 N. Dixon Avenue. Sorry, but pizza boxes cannot be recycled at this time.

Know When to Make the Call
It’s important everyone in your home knows that 911 is the number to call for emergency help. An emergency is anytime you or somebody else needs help from police, fire or emergency medical personnel.
When you call 911 in Cary, you’ll talk to a trained communicator, who will ask what type of emergency you are having as well as your location, name and phone number.
Try to remain calm and answer the communicator’s questions in the order they are asked so that the correct agency can be called upon. Don’t hang up until told to do so, unless a threat to your safety requires you to leave.
In an emergency, the simplest questions can seem hard to answer. Consider affixing 911 stickers with your address and phone number to every phone in your home. These stickers are also helpful to any guest who has to call 911. Learn more about our 911 Communications Center and what to do in an emergency by going to Police Department at www.townofcary.org.
