Improving Cary Parkway

In March, we kicked off a rehabilitation project that will improve the Town-owned portions of Cary Parkway .

The project includes repaving a 1.2-mile section of Southeast Cary Parkway from Tryon Road to Holly Springs Road and a 5-mile section of Southwest Cary Parkway from High House Road to Kildaire Farm Road . We’re also installing new traffic signal detection devices and pavement markings to improve travel along the corridor.

We expect the project to be complete by the fall.

During the next few months, you may experience minor delays as crews will need to periodically close lanes. At least one lane will remain open in each direction at all times. Our electronic message signs will be used during construction to give you timely information.

For more information, visit Cary Parkway Pavement Rehabilitation at www.townofcary.org.

Shivar is Town Manager

In March, the Cary Town Council named Ben Shivar as our new Town Manager.

Shivar has served as Cary’s Assistant Town Manager for 13 years and took on the role of Interim Town Manager in October after Bill Coleman’s retirement.

He was sworn into his new office on March 12 at Council’s regular meeting.

Council conducted a national search that drew 70 applicants from as far away as Alaska, California, Washington, Nevada, Texas, and Michigan.

Shivar has worked in North Carolina local government for over 32 years. He has previously served as manager of Chatham County and Siler City .

New Recycling Carts are Ready to Roll

We’re gearing up to begin delivering the new rolling recycling carts. We’ll be distributing them throughout an eight-week period beginning this month.

You’ll receive a notice on your garbage cart the week before your new recycling cart is delivered. Continue to use your existing recycling bin until your cart arrives.

Once you receive your cart, use it for recycling at the curb every other week. You can keep your green bin for other uses or recycle it by placing it inside your recycling cart.

If you live in a multi-family dwelling of three or more units, you’ll have the option of receiving a 65-gallon cart or keeping your existing 18-gallon bin for recycling. Keep in mind, whichever option you choose, your recycling will also be picked up every other week.

A calendar with the recycling collection schedule will be provided with your new cart and made available on the Town’s Web site.

Your collection day won’t change—we’ll still pick up your recycling on the same day we collect your garbage and yard waste. (Garbage and yard waste will continue to be picked up every week.)

For more details, visit Recycling at www.townofcary.org.

Updating Our Response Plan

We’re asking for your input as we update our Water Shortage Response Plan.

Join us on April 29 anytime from 4-7 p.m. at our Operations Center, located at 400 James Jackson Ave, for an Open House where we will provide information on the plan and receive your input on the proposed update.

The plan will be available on the Web for review beginning April 1, and comments can be provided April 1 to May 1 using an online survey. For more, visit www.townofcary.org.

Spruce Up for Spring

Warmer temperatures and longer days can only mean one thing: It’s time for spring and spring cleaning. This year, don’t limit your focus to attics and closets. Get involved with Spruce and help keep our community clean and forever green!

Spruce is Cary ’s new volunteer-based program designed to enhance the quality of life in our community through projects that beautify Cary as well as pick up and prevent litter.

Help us launch this exciting new program by participating in our spring Spruce events. During Mother’s Day weekend, we’ll celebrate Mother Earth with a Spring Litter Sweep on May 9.

Also on May 9, we’re partnering with Wake County to collect household hazardous waste such as old electronics, paint, automotive fluids, garden chemicals and florescent lights at our Garmon Operations Center , 400 James Jackson Ave.

On May 16, get your garden beds ready for the growing season with free compost from our Compost Giveaway event.

Do you have an idea for a project to Spruce up your neighborhood? Contact Conservation Specialist Heather Morell at 469-4301 or heather.morell@townofcary.org.

For more information on Spruce, visit www.townofcary.org.

Promoting Building Safety

When you enter a house or building, you’re probably not thinking about whether it is safe or structurally sound. Fortunately, our safety experts think about building safety and fire prevention every day.

To raise awareness of building safety, we’re joining in the national celebration of Building Safety Week, May 3-9. This year’s theme is “Building Safety: Where You Live, Work and Play.”

We’ll be sharing steps you can take to make your spaces safer, obtaining permits for your home improvement projects, proper placement of smoke alarms, and checking gas appliances. Details about events and tips will be available at www.townofcary.org.

Spring Daze Features Art of Storytelling

We’re rolling out several new features at this year’s Spring Daze Arts and Crafts Festival, set for Saturday, April 25 at 10 a.m. at Bond Park.

For the first time ever, we’re providing a dedicated stage for the ages-old art form of storytelling. Our storytellers will weave tales of mystery, intrigue and fantasy all day long.

We’re also partnering with the Cary Jaycees to present the first ever amateur photo contest. Adults and youth are invited to participate, and all entries will be displayed at the Bond Park boathouse.

The 16th annual festival will feature more than 150 local artists, entertainment on four stages, your favorite festival foods, and much more.

For details, visit Spring Daze at www.townofcary.org.

We’re hosting two WaterWise Workshops at Bond Park Community Center in May.
